Pastor's Corner Jan 19 2020

This year marks the Bicentennial of the Diocese of Richmond (1820-2020).

We give thanks to God for the founding of a Diocese placed under the care of successors of the Apostles. The Catechism of the Council of Trent teaches us that Bishops are placed over various dioceses to govern not only the other ministers of the Church, but the faithful also, and to promote their salvation with supreme vigilance and care.

This promoting of salvation is accomplished through the teaching of what is necessary (for salvation) and the dispensing of the Sacraments. The diocese is the ordinary channel through which this is accomplished.

For instance, the same Catechism reminds us when addressing the Sacrament of Penance that its minister must be a priest possessing ordinary or delegated jurisdiction. Whoever discharges this sacred function must be invested not only with the power of orders (a priest validly ordained by a Bishop), but also with that of jurisdiction (faculties obtained from the local Bishop).

May the Holy Spirit ever guide our shepherds and those delegated by them to promote salvation, that they may be faithful instruments corresponding to God’s grace. May we pray this is accomplished, especially as this Bicentennial is celebrated.

- Thank you for your generosity.

- Please know that you and your families are in my prayers, especially at the Altar of Our Lord.
